Waterways Ireland Over the years, footpaths have become rutted, sunken and waterlogged, and tree roots were protruding in places. Work involved upgrading these areas so making them suitable for maintenance vehicles and pedestrian traffic. It also enables Waterways Ireland staff and boat users to operate the locks safely.
