The ICW of Clonaslee is comprised of a series of five ponds and two receiving settlement ponds. The large wetland area facilitates opportunities for the various treatment process (physical, biological & chemical ) to occur. The final effluent is discharged into the River Clodiagh.
Sewage from the town gravitates to the site and is pumped to the ICW. It flows through a series of ponds where it is treated, and finally discharges to the River Clodiagh. Each wetland pond is planted with a variety of emergent plant species which not only provides treatment for inflowing waters but also enhances the biodiversity and amenity of the area.
Specialist monitoring equipment is installed at the inlet and outlet points in order to measure flow and nutrient quality of the effluent. All data is transmitted to a computer based control system which monitors and controls data.
Construction began in August 2011 and works were completed in May 2012.
The site was officially opened by Mr Phil Hogan TD on Friday February 8th 2013.
